On September 2nd, the 13th China International Steel Congress Grand Thematic Session was held grandly in Shanghai. Leaders and experts from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), the World Steel Association (WSA), as well as key steel production enterprises from both China and abroad, leading enterprises in upstream and downstream industrial chains, and suppliers of metallurgical technology and equipment gathered to discuss the future trends of the steel industry under the theme of “Collaboration, Win-Win, Green, and Sustainable.” They also jointly explored a path towards collaborative, mutually beneficial, green, and sustainable development.

The thematic session was divided into four sections. The first section was the opening ceremony and keynote speeches focused on “Global Steel Industry Trends.” The remaining three sections were forums, addressing topics such as “Future Steel Demand,” “Future Steel Technology,” and “Future Steel Raw Materials.” Participants delivered passionate and insightful speeches, jointly exploring effective paths to promote collaboration within the industrial chain, maintain its stability, and drive green and sustainable development. Efforts were made to build a more open, inclusive, cooperative, and win-win steel industry ecosystem, jointly ushering in a new era of green steel for the world.

He Wenbo, Executive President of CISA, and Zhang Haideng, Deputy Director of the Raw Materials Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, delivered opening speeches. Yao Lin, President of CISA and Chairman of China Minerals Resources Group Co., Ltd., Edwin Basson, Director General of WSA, Yu Yong, Chairman of Hebei Iron & Steel Group Co., Ltd., Kazuhisa Fukuda, Vice President of Nippon Steel Corporation, and Karel Eloot, Senior Managing Partner of McKinsey’s Global Metals and Mining Practice, delivered keynote speeches respectively.

Three round table forums were held during the conference, inviting leaders and experts from renowned steel and upstream/downstream enterprises and institutions to share their insights on hot topics including “Future Steel Demand,” “Future Steel Technology,” and “Future Steel Raw Materials.”

Hosted by CISA and co-organized by the Metallurgical Industry Sub-Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and the International Exchange and Cooperation Center for Metallurgical Industry, the congress attracted over 1,000 representatives from steel and related industries both domestically and internationally.

Since its inception in 2000, the China International Steel Congress has been held biennially for 12 successful editions, garnering high recognition and attention from the steel industry worldwide. Starting from this edition, the congress will be held annually. From September 1st to 5th, the congress was held concurrently with the 22nd China International Metallurgical Industry Exhibition and the First Steel Structure Construction Industry Chain Exhibition. In addition to the thematic session, 18 parallel sessions were also held, focusing on topics such as steel markets, new metallurgical technologies, iron resources, automotive steel development, coke evaluation standards for blast furnaces, innovative development of the stainless steel industry, scrap steel statistics, low-carbon and green development of refractory materials, development of the steel structure construction industry chain, electric arc furnace short-process steelmaking, standardization in the steel industry, green and intelligent mining technologies for iron ore, steel for green buildings, supply and demand exchanges between railway equipment and the steel industry, capacity building for green and low-carbon transformation in the steel industry, and development of the electrical steel industry chain. Together, they aimed to propel the steel ecosystem towards higher-quality development.
